— What Is Mindfulness Yoga?

Bringing awareness to the body through breathing and movement can have such positive and beneficial effects on our mental and emotional state. It helps us learn to be kinder to ourselves, accepting the many facets of our being with greater sensitivity and understanding. In addition, paying attention to how we behave during the practice may reveal unconscious attitudes, patterns and feeling -- the same attitudes, patterns and feelings that manifest in our day-to-day life. Once we're aware of them, we're more likely to be able to choose whether to let them control our behaviour.

Mindfulness, a word derived from the Pali term sati and the Sanskrit smṛti, means 'to remember'. It can be also called attention and awareness. Attention is not something new that we need to learn, though; we're always paying attention to something. We just need to remember to move that attention to the present moment!

It's hatha yoga, focusing on what is happening in the moment and how the body is responding to it.

This approach offers us the opportunity to explore ourselves from within, listening to how we're working within our body. The focus is on body/mind awareness. Instead of thinking about what we're achieving, we look at how we're feeling/thinking/being while we're moving from one asana to another. We're observing ourselves without getting involved, creating a more internalised and meditative atmosphere.
